Our first day went smoothy and without hitches, just as planned. It was a long and tiring day and at times a bit boring on the long train ride (7 1/2 hours) but very enjoyable.
We arose at around 5:30 am at the Jones home in Pittsburgh and Collin was sound asleep when he hit the bed at our room in the Holiday Inn - Historic District in Philly at 10:30 pm.
In between we covered over 300 miles by train across Pennsylvania and added many more by subway and walking in Philly.
We did a little sightseeing around the hotel area and in our travels between the train station and hotel and between the hotel and the Jones-Albright family in Collingwood, NJ. Collin said he didn't realize that Philly was this big!
The highlight of our visit today was getting together with Jill and Brian and the kids in Collingswood. We had a great time there noticing how everyone has grown and all the activities the kids are into. A great visit!
Gonna' miss Maddie and her family this time but will catch up with them on the next visit.
A couple of challenging moments on the subway as Collin had to help Papa negotiate the gates and making sure we were on the right train and goin' the right direction!
Collin said he felt like his mommy and daddy and Nana had come along on the trip with us as he used his new cell phone to text with them regularly throughout the day, updating them on our adventures and letting everyone know he loves them. He misses his family and said he wished they had come with him on the trip but he said this was the first time being away from them that he didn't feel homesick. He sends text messages each evening to his entire phonebook telling everyone he loves them and calls his dad at bedtime for the same purpose. I'm sure that everyone knows by now that Collin loves them!
Collin is a great traveling partner for Papa. He looks out for me, reminds me of stuff like takin' my pills (ugh!), makes me laugh and inspires me with his insightful comments.
More later.

Collin and his Papa will be traveling on an Amtrak train adventure to experience historic Philadelphia for 3 summer days, July 23-25. We're calling this our Mountaineers Do Philly tour.
Through this blog we will take you with us on that adventure and learn about Philly with us.
In addition to this pre-trip posting about our plans and itinerary, we will put up daily posts and pix and other stuff we think might interest you about what we are doing and learning.
It's a joint project so look forward to hearing from both both of us.
Join us for the trip by train on the Amtrak "Pennsylvanian" across Pennsylvania, riding the Philly subway, visits to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, US Mint, historic ships, Pat's King of Steaks (for tasty Philly cheesesteaks), Phillies vs Brewers at Citizens Bank Park and more.
And hopefully some visits with cousins in Philly and Collingswood, NJ.
Feel free to click on the links and photos here, especially the educational ones for kids.
We hope you will send us your comments, ideas and questions here on the blog or by e-mail at rjoneswvu@gmail.com. We will respond to them all ASAP.
